If you are into riding rock gardens have we think we have got a trail for you to try out. The Old Santa Susana Stage Rd Trail is basically a trail made of rocks. It's not that long and there are other trails to ride in the same area but if you want to test your rock crawling skills then you may enjoy it. If you plan on riding it fast just make sure you have the suspension for it and a full face helmet! It's kind of a cool trail since it's pretty much solid rock and stands out from the rest of the trails in the area. This trail is in the same area as the Rocky Peak trail system just on the other side of the freeway and offers some other semi interesting trails to ride while you are out there. The rock garden part of the trail is little less than a mile long but will take some time to finish because you will be going pretty slow... if you are smart! It's pretty much all going down too so there is no riding up the rocks unless you come back the same way. And there will definitely be some places you will be walking your bike unless you are really good or really brave. |

Santa Susana Stage Rd Trail Review
The Old Santa Susana Stage Rd Trail is one of those trails you do once just to see how well you can do and then move on. It's more of a challenge than it is fun so once you finish it you really don't feel like doing it again. And if you decide to walk back up it you really won't want to do it again! You most likely will be riding your brakes the whole time and trying not to go over the handlebars since it's really unpredictable because there are so many ways to get your tire stuck in a groove in the rocks.
We have done this trail using a variety of bikes and the more suspension and more downhill geometry you have the better. If you had a downhill bike you could probably go pretty fast on the trail and have a good time. If you don't feel comfortable riding over rocky terrain and trails like Hummingbird and Chumash scare you then don't give this tail any consideration. If you do decide to do it then you can check out the other trails around the area. There is nothing too exciting in the area in general and you will end up in Chatsworth eventually if you keep going down. And you will be doing some climbing to get yourself back out to the Rocky Peak area. And no it's not worth doing a 2 car shuttle so don't waste your time.
